Five UBC athletes are making the trip to Guelph, Ontario this weekend for the AGSI Canadian Cross Country Championships, taking place on Saturday, November 27. Speed River Track and Field Club is hosting the event.

Maggie Woodward, currently in her second-year at UBC, qualified for the BC team with a repeat win at the Provincial Championships junior race last month. Showing last year's win was no fluke, she won this year's race by a margin of over 20-seconds.

Second-year Luc Bruchet and first-year Justin Kent also qualified for the BC team with 2nd and 4th place finishes respectively at the Provincial Championships, and will run jointly for BC and UBC. Joining these two are second-years Tim Huebsch and Nick Thomas.

Last weekend Bruchet, Kent and Huebsch were part of UBC's 8th place team at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, Washington.Woodward, meanwhile, helped the UBC women to a 14th place result. Not to be left behind, Thomas also made the lengthy trip down to support his teammates.

At the 2009 National Championships, Bruchet secured a spot on the junior national team with a 6th place finish in the junior race. He went on to run at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, finishing 2nd of the Canadian juniors and 65th overall.

In addition to the five UBC athletes, former Thunderbird distance-man Kerry Kazuta is headed to the Championships as a member of the BC senior men's team. Kazuta, who now runs for Point Grey Track and Field Club, finished 9th at the Provincial Championships to secure his spot, and will make his first appearance at Nationals. It is also his first BC team selection.
