VANCOUVER – Competing for Point Grey Track Club, Luc Bruchet took the victory at the Canadian Cross Country Championships bettering the 65-runner field in the senior men’s 10km race. The individual title help lead Point Grey to its second consecutive team championship, with London Runner Distance Club and the Running Room Athletic Club.

With conditions reminiscent of two years ago, rainfall in the lead up to the race left the course muddy and wet as Jericho Park played host to the championships for the third year in a row. Bruchet put in several surges at times but runner-up Chris Winter and third-place Aaron Hendrikx bridged the gap on every occasion until the latter stages of the race where Luc was able to win by nine seconds. The top three were separated by 12 seconds with the winning time being 31 minutes, 38 seconds.

Putting his marathon strength to action on the XC course, Rob Watson mixed it up with the top group coming through with a seventh place finish. Theo Hunt had a huge race placing tenth while Adam Byles rounded out the team’s scoring with a 19th place showing, solidifying the team’s spot atop the results. Battling injury, Kelly Wiebe was forced to drop out of the race.

48   Devin Rajala                 35:50.00

49   Barry Donovan              35:57.31

On the women’s side, Point Grey snuck onto the podium grabbing the bronze medal, the first time the team has placed top three at the Canadian XC Championships. Led by Sabrina Wilkie’s ninth place finish, Point Grey joined winner’s London Western and U of C Athletics Club on the podium. Wilkie covered the 7km course in a time of 25 minutes, 53 seconds while Natasha Wodak took the individual title.

Catherine Farish was 25th, Jen Moroz 33rd and Kirsten Lee 37th to complete the team scoring as the teams top four. Noreen Mackay was the first displacer in 53rd.
