Canadian Track and Field Championships / Olympic TrialsPublished by
Point Grey TFC is in Calgary, AB, for the Canadian Track & Field Championships / Olympic Trials, with athletes competing in the 800 m, 1,500 m, 3,000 m steeplechase, and 5,000 m.
We have three men in the 1,500 m: Nigel Hole, Luc Bruchet, and Jordan Smith.
Jordan Smith ran in the 1,500 m qualifying round on Wednesday, placing ninth (4:16.49) in a slow-starting, tactical race. With only the winner from the race advancing to the semi-finals, it concluded Smith's 2012 Championships.
Having achieved the qualifying standard (3:48.00), Nigel and Luc are automatically in the semi-finals. Nigel is ranked 17th, at 3:45.97, a mark achieved at the Payton Jordan Inv. in April. Bruchet is ranked 23rd, at 3:47.70, which he ran at the Harry Jerome Int. Track Classic in June. The men's 1,500 m semi-finals are Thursday at 6:20 pm local time.
In the women's 800 m, Devan Wiebe is ranked 13th, at 2:05.92. The junior, who'll be representing Canada at the IAAF World Junior T&F Championships in Spain next month, is set to toe the start line Friday at 6:40 pm local time.
Friday night will also see Samuel Pawluk run the men's 5,000 m, at 7:55 pm local time. He comes in with a season's best of 14:26, ranking him eigth on the start list.
On Saturday, Jenny McCormack is running the 3,000 m steeplechase at 12:45 pm local time. McCormack is entered with a seed time of 11:58.84, which she ran at the UBC Pre-Jerome earlier this month.
Club members Ryan Huff and Ben Thistlewood are also in attendance at the Trials to support their clubmates.
As a new club geared towards competitive athletics, this event marks the high point for the summer season for most athletes, and fulfils our mission to develop athletes who can compete with our country's best.
