Bazan Bay 5k recap

Point Grey was well represented at the Synergy Bazan Bay 5k today in the scenic Vancouver Island town of Sidney.

We were up early and caught the 7 am ferry to the Island. The conditions were good - warm and sunny, but there was a headwind for part of the way out on the flat out-and-back course.

Last year's World Championships semi-finalist Geoff Martinson took it out from the start, and won in 14:20 - a new course record. On the women's side, Malindi Elmore also set a new course record, running 15:48.

Ben Thistlewood was the top Point Grey athlete on the day, placing fourth in 14:58, in his 2012 opener.

Sam Pawluk was close behind, placing seventh, in 15:08. He used the race as preparation for the NACAC Cross Country Championships two weeks from now in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Having an off-day was Dylan Gant, who ran his first race for Point Grey TFC. He ran 15:45 to place 20th overall.

Kirsten Lee went out hard and ran a strong race, clocking 20:17 - a one minute personal best! She placed sixth in her age category.

Complete results are available here.

There was also a sprint race within the race. They had a timing mat set up 100 metres from the finish, and collected splits of the last 100 metres for everyone.

A shout out to Richard Lee, who drove us to the race, and was out on the course cheering us on.

Following the race, we enjoyed an awesome buffet at the local community centre complete with mini-sandwiches of salmon and cream cheese, and then had some more brunch after at Beacon & Eggs.
